“I’ve come in so many times feeling down, and before I leave, I’m laughing. I love coming here. I look forward to coming here.”

Tammy was one of our earliest patients. She battled 20 years of ongoing health problems and visited many doctors’ offices, but something always seemed to be missing. Her daughter came across our flyer and encouraged her mother to visit. “You feel loved. You feel valuable here. That’s a wonderful thing.” When you feel better, you can think better. You can do things better. I don’t feel as down as I used to. I am more balanced. Sure, I have hard days, [but] I don’t let them overwhelm me anymore.”

“I [want people to] see that there are people who care for them and they are not alone.”

Beth suffered “a series of several unfortunate situations in life,” incurring serious injuries and chronic health conditions leaving her alone and in need of medical attention. Beth reached out to many physicians for care but was turned away. “I have been told since I do not have insurance, I could not be served. I have been told that I am too old, so I was not worth the care. I have been told that my injuries are not going to get any better; therefore, I need to just buck up…. I have been kicked to the curb.” A friend referred Beth to us. She began receiving the medical care she needed, referrals to community partners for help with other needs, counseling, and someone to pray with her. Beth shared, “Relationships of the people at [CommonGood Medical, formerly Hope Clinic of McKinney] show that people are here for one another. You leave here feeling like family…someone really cares.”

“I came through those doors half dead.”

Chris came to CommonGood Medical (formerly Hope Clinic of McKinney) in a rapidly declining state. “I have been through rehabs. I have been in hospitals, but I never looked to get better. [CommonGood Medical, formerly Hope Clinic of McKinney] didn’t want anything from [me]. They just wanted to help. In my experience, I have been to enough emergency rooms, enough places being an uninsured individual. The bottom line is the money and with [CommonGood Medical, formerly Hope Clinic] it’s not.” Looking at Chris now, you will see a striking transformation. He has energy to do the things he loves, like fishing, working on his land, and giving back to the community. “The amount of genuine sincerity that you guys showed me as an individual. . . I am sure that everyone who walks through that door is treated with the same care—nonjudgmental, understanding. I came through those doors half dead, really, literally. I am a testament to y'all's work.”

Hugo’s life was turned upside down when he was arrested and held for several months in jail, despite breaking no laws. When the police discovered the mistake, they released him. The life he built had fallen apart while wrongly incarcerated: His immigration status had lapsed, his apartment and its contents were confiscated, and his truck—the source of his livelihood—was towed. Everything was taken. Without a job or money, Hugo became homeless. “In those days, I was very sick with my [high blood] pressure, and I did not have medication.” Thankfully, he learned about CommonGood Medical (formerly Hope Clinic of McKinney) and was able to receive much-needed medical care and other resources. He noted: “Other clinics you go [to], they attend to you but that is it. They don’t know your name.”

“We come as immigrants. We don’t know the culture. We don’t know the people or the language, and there is no one to help us. Who do we turn to?”

Maria first learned about us from the Baptist Immigration Center, the nonprofit that generously donated its space for clinic operations. It was a great find for her family because they had never sought medical care in the United States. Maria believes, “God placed [her family] when they needed it…Everyone treats me well, even if I do not understand English.” Maria is unsure where she would go for medical care if it were not for CommonGood Medical. She reflects that she knows so many individuals and families like herself that need the clinic. “The people of [CommonGood Medical, formerly Hope Clinic of McKinney] are good people. Thank you, God bless you.”
